!Bones
Bones is a 2001 American supernatural black horror film directed by Ernest Dickerson and starring rapper Snoop Dogg as the eponymous Jimmy Bones, a murdered numbers runner who rises from the grave to avenge his death. The film pays homage to blaxploitation films of the 1970s and incorporates numerous elements from the genre.
In 1979, Jimmy Bones is a respected numbers runner loved in his neighborhood as its protector. However, he is betrayed and brutally murdered by corrupt cop Lupovich and drug pusher Eddie Mack. They force Jimmy’s associates, Jeremiah and Shotgun, to take turns stabbing him to death. His lover, Pearl, is the only one who refuses to participate, attempting to kill herself instead but being stopped.
After his death, Jimmy’s elegant brownstone building becomes his tomb and is closed. Twenty-two years later, the neighborhood has deteriorated due to Bones’ absence, allowing drugs to infiltrate the area. Four teens—Patrick, his brother Bill, their step-sister Tia, and their best friend Maurice—purchase the Bones house with the intention of turning it into a nightclub.
During the renovation process, Tia discovers a black dog in the basement. Unbeknownst to them, this dog is the spiritual manifestation of Jimmy’s spirit. As the dog feeds, Jimmy is slowly resurrected. Patrick meets Pearl, who still resides in the neighborhood, and her daughter Cynthia, to whom he is immediately attracted.
Exploring the basement, Patrick, Cynthia, Bill, Tia, and Maurice stumble upon Jimmy Bones’ remains and realize he was actually murdered. Despite this revelation, they decide to keep quiet about the murder and bury the remains.
Jeremiah, the father of Patrick and Bill and Tia’s stepfather, learns about their plan to open a nightclub in Bones’ old building. He demands that they leave, but they defy his wishes and proceed with the nightclub’s opening. On the inaugural night, Maurice is lured into an upstairs room and mauled to death by the black dog.
Once fully resurrected, Jimmy Bones sets the club on fire, scaring off the patrons, and begins his quest for revenge. The film weaves together supernatural elements, practical effects, and the gritty atmosphere of blaxploitation cinema, making it a cult classic appreciated for Snoop Dogg and Pam Grier’s performances, as well as Ernest Dickerson’s direction.
